Anthony Leon
Tenor Anthony León has gone from Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer in 2021 and 2022 to principal roles with LA Opera and summer festivals in Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg. He is set to make role and house debuts with the Dutch National Opera, Cologne Opera, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Competition Winners
Recent Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singers who have won major vocal competitions are almost too numerous to list. Here are some of the awards that these outstanding singers garnered in 2023.
Zachary Nelson
Zachary Nelson’s career at the Santa Fe Opera began in 2012 when he was an Apprentice Singer. He will be back with us in 2024, singing the role of Herr von Faninel in Der Rosenkavalier.
Jonah Hoskins
An Apprentice Singer with the Santa Fe Opera in 2021 and 2022, Jonah Hoskins will star as Nemorino in the SFO’s production of The Elixir of Love, premiering on July 27, 2024.
Megan Marino
A much-lauded mezzo soprano, Megan Marino is also an educator with a passion for promoting interactive musical experiences across multiple artistic genres of music and dance.
Luke Sutliff
Baritone Luke Sutliff wowed the audience and the critics at the opening night of Orfeo this summer when he stepped in to substitute in the leading role,

2023 Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition Winners
Once again, the Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Singers were well-represented at the Metropolitan Opera’s prestigious 2023 Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition.
Richard Trey Smagur
Once described as “the tallest guy on the stage,” tenor Richard Trey Smagur has performed Wagner in productions at the Metropolitan Opera and other prestigious venues. He returns to The Santa Fe Opera this summer to sing in the much-anticipated The Flying Dutchman.
Bille Bruley
A native of Montgomery, Texas, this talented tenor joins two former apprentices in the much-anticipated Santa Fe Opera production of The Flying Dutchman this summer.
Andrew Harris

Tenor William Burden was just beginning his impressive career when he was a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer in 1990.

Soprano Sylvia D’Eramo was introduced to Santa Fe Opera audiences in 2018 and 2019 as one of our Apprentice Singers. Ms. D’Eramo will sing the role of Musetta in La bohème at the Met this year.
Erik van Heyningen
A quick look at Erik Van Heyningen’s Instagram page will tell you that he is a “dog person.” Indeed, he is the proud dad of a handsome pooch named Max. He is also an exceptionally talented bass baritone.
Anthony Robin Schneider
Anthony Robin Schneider makes his home in Frankfurt, Germany. A talented bass, he will sing the title role in Oper Frankfurt’s staging of Handel’s Hercules, opening in April 2023.
