Anthony Robin Schneider

By Martha Baker, Apprentice Watch Editor

Anthony Robin Schneider makes his home in Frankfurt, Germany. A talented bass, he will sing the title role in Oper Frankfurt’s staging of Handel’s Hercules. He is a former member of their young artist program. This new production is directed by Barrie Kosky and will open on April 30, 2023.

This season Mr. Schneider is also slated to sing in a new production of Oper Frankfurt’s Magic Flute and the revival of Der ferne Klang. Writing about that production, he noted, “It was the first opera I sang in Frankfurt.  It’s also the first time I’ve restudied a score listening to my very own recording from 2019.”

He will share the Oper Frankfurt stage in 2023 with former Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singers Erik Van Heyningen and Jarrett Porter. (See adjacent profiles.)

Mr. Schneider’s schedule this year includes the Tiroler Festspeile Erl, a summer festival set in the Austrian countryside. While there, he will sing the roles of Fafner in their new production of Siegfried. He returns to the Cleveland Orchestra for Mozart’s Requiem and will make his debut with the Dutch National Opera as King Henry in a production of Lohengrin directed by Cristof Loy.

Mr. Schneider is originally from Austria and New Zealand. He holds a BA in Music with Honors (Voice Performance) from the University of Auckland and is a graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and the Houston Grand Opera Studio. He was an Apprentice Singer at the Santa Fe Opera in 2017 and 2018. He made his debut with The Santa Fe Opera in Ariadne aufNaxos as Truffaldino and sang the role of the Baron/Grand Inquisitor in Candide. He is trilingual - English, French, and German - which enhances his versatility in the culturally diverse opera repertoire.

Mr. Schneider was a national semifinalist at the 2016 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2016, he was awarded a grant from the Gerda Lissner Foundation Lieder/Song Competition, and 2nd Prize in the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition. He is also the proud recipient of a Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation Scholarship. He is represented by Magnum Opus Artists. Here is a LINK to Mr. Schneider’s website.
