A New Odyssey
Do you remember the film 2001: A Space Odyssey about a high functioning computer named “Hal” who became an indispensable mechanical teammate helping to keep our planet safe? The brilliant director, Stanley Kubrick, presented a prescient dilemma to the audience: how much should we rely on and trust Artificial Intelligence in the future?
Mommy Dearest
Motherhood is revered in religion, most cultures, and portrayed as sacred in many genres of the arts throughout history. As we know from Opera, not every mother is a selfless caregiver as evidenced by The Queen of the Night, Lucretia Borgia, and Clytemnestra.
The Fools of April
Ever the wise and wity man, Mark Twain stated,
“It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.”
A Midwinter Night’s Read
It has always seemed counterintuitive to me that every summer many of us have a ritual called “books to read at the beach.” Why do we plant our noses in books when it is prime season to soak up vitamin D, work in the garden, have drinks al fresco with friends, take a hike, or fire up the barbeque? By adopting a small change in mindset and embracing wintery props like a roaring fire and a hot toddy, it’s possible to avoid frostbite and read some compelling literature that may have been relegated to the long, hot, rainy days of summer.
Singing Valentines
February is the month in which we honor Love. Given our collective love of Opera and anticipating the Santa Fe Opera's 2023 season, I thought it fitting to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a musical love letter from Monteverdi and arias from Wagner's Flying Dutchman, Dvořák's Rusalka, Puccini's Tosca, and Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande. Enjoy your singing valentines from five of the greatest composers in history.
Blame it on Babylon
Have you ever wondered where the idea for New Year’s Eve originated? Did the original party planners have as their goal to create a night of revelry where crowds of partygoers celebrated to excess, wore glitter tiaras, and blew endlessly on tinny-sounding paper horns?
The Holidays Unmasked
It is December 1 and I just realized that Christmas is in 25 days and the familiar panic of former years is nowhere to be found.
