Bille Bruley

Tenor Bille Bruley will sing the role of Steuermann in our 2023 production of The Flying Dutchman. He is one of three former Apprentice Singers in this opera. (See adjacent profiles of Nicholas Brownlee and Richard Trey Smagur.  As a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer in 2018, he covered the roles of Captain Nolan in Doctor Atomic and Governor/Vanderdendur/Captain in Candide and sang in the choruses of Candide, Madama Butterfly, Doctor Atomic, and Italian Girl in Algiers. Patrons who were lucky enough to attend the Apprentice Showcase that summer may remember his stirring rendition of an aria from Peter Grimes. Returning in 2019, he sang the role of Benjamin in the world premiere of The Thirteenth Child and was in the choruses of La bohème and Jenůfa, where he also covered the role of Laka.

Mr. Bruley is becoming well-known for his portrayal of Steve Wozniak in The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs. He has performed the role in Atlanta, Austin, and Kansas City, and is slated to reprise it at the Utah Opera in May 2023 and the San Francisco Opera for their 2023/24 season. A critic for the Atlanta Journal Constitution described his performance as “flawless.” He joined the Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio in 2018. As part of that young artist program, he sang the roles of Louis Sullivan in Shining Brow, Bern Venters in Riders of the Purple Sage, and Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos. He returned to the Arizona Opera in December 2022 to sing the role of Bacchus in the same Strauss opera.

As a result of his hard work, he has won prestigious competitions and awards. These include the William Matheus Sullivan Musical Foundation Award and Career Grant, the Iris Henwood Richards Memorial Award, and the Richard Tucker Memorial Award. He was a finalist in the Met Opera’s National Council Auditions and won the Lois Alba Aria Competition.

In the midst of his busy career on the stage, Mr. Bruley is in the process of completing his doctoral degree at Arizona State University. He earned his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and a master’s degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He is represented by Magnum Opus Artists Management.
