Music, Myth, Magic and the Legend of Orpheus

James M. Keller and Mary Springfels will guide you through the origins of the Orpheus myth. Topics will include: 

  • Its revival in the Italian Renaissance

  • Its effect on virtuoso singing and the birth of Opera

  • Monteverdi’s interpretation of “magical” Orpheus

  • Modern re-imaginings of Monteverdi

  • How the myth has inspired composers from Monteverdi through the present day.
