The Elias Quartet was formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester, England) where they are currently the Ensemble-in-Residence. They took their name from Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah, based on the Biblical story illustrating the journey through darkness toward enlightenment. In 2009 the quartet was selected as a BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artist, and also received the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. With the support of the Trust, the Elias Quartet mounted “The Beethoven Project,” performing, recording, and documenting all sixteen of Beethoven’s string quartets. Their performances are described as “imaginative, full-blooded and impeccable” (Classic FM Magazine).
