The 1950s and 60s were “The Golden Age” of opera cartoons, with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd doing battle in “The Rabbit of Seville” and “What’s Opera, Doc?” But opera actually made its cartoon premiere in 1929 with “The Opry House,” starring Mickey Mouse, and continues today in many episodes of The Simpsons.
We’ll explore this rich history, illustrated with video excerpts from the above titles as well as “The Band Concert,” “Mickey’s Grand Opera,” “All the Great Operas in 10 Minutes,” and “Willie the Whale Who Sang at the Met,” about a uniquely talented sperm whale who can sing arias, duets, and trios all by himself.
This course is presented by Mark Tiarks, former Director of Planning & Marketing for the Santa Fe Opera and General Director of Chicago Opera Theater.
