At RENESAN: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony - Great Performers of the Past

  • St. John’s United Methodist Church 1200 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe (map)

The final concert of the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus 40th anniversary season, which takes place at the Lensic on May 19th, will feature a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony conducted by Guillermo Figueroa and featuring four soloists who all have strong ties to Santa Fe.

Soprano Teresa Perrotta was a member of the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer program in 2021, singing Alice Ford in Falstaff. Teresa returns to the Santa Fe Opera this season where she will sing the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni.

Mezzo Soprano Katherine DeYoung was a member of the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer Program in 2018 and 2019 where she covered the role of The Mayor’s Wife in Jenůfa and performed the Act One Duet from La Favorita and the Act One Finale as Ma Joad from The Grapes of Wrath for the Apprentice Scenes program.

During the summer of 2021, tenor Anthony Leon was an Apprentice Artist at Santa Fe Opera covering the role of Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. More recently, he sang Remendado in the Santa Fe Opera production of Carmen.

Colorado bass Griffen Hogan Tracy joined the Santa Fe Opera as an Apprentice Artist for the 2022 season, covering the role of Manuel Toulon in Huang Ro’s new opera M. Butterfly and was featured in the Apprentice Scenes program as Phillipe II Don Carlos.

As an introduction to Beethoven’s monumental work, Ifan Payne will present a two-session multimedia program at Renesan, Santa Fe’s Institute for Lifelong Learning. These will take place on April 25th and May 2nd at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 1200 Old Pecos Trail.

This course consists of audio and video excerpts of the interpretations of the 9th Symphony from the first complete recorded performance in 1923 to the present. It will provide an insight into the way interpretations of this great symphony have changed over the last 100 years and will be an opportunity to hear recordings of famous orchestras, conductors and singers of the past.
