Please join us via Zoom on Monday, October 2 at 6 pm as the Vivace Book Club discusses Florence! Foster!! Jenkins!!! The World's Worst Opera Singer by Darryl W. Bullock.  The Zoom format allows our out-of-town members to participate and provides greater flexibility for our local members. Watch for updates as we may also schedule an in-person Vivace next year.

Florence Foster Jenkins

Florence Foster Jenkins was a wealthy socialite with a passion for opera singing, despite her lack of vocal talent. Born in 1868, she gained fame for her hilariously off-key performances that both amused and captivated audiences. The book Florence! Foster!! Jenkins!!! The World's Worst Opera Singer explores her life, delving into her background, her devoted circle of friends who shielded her from criticism, and her unintentional rise to fame. Published in 2016, the book offers a humorous and empathetic look at a woman who fearlessly pursued her musical dreams, leaving an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.

The movie adaptation of Florence! Foster!! Jenkins!!!, directed by Stephen Frears and released in 2016, brings the captivating story to the big screen. Meryl Streep takes on the titular role of the enthusiastic but tone-deaf opera singer, while Hugh Grant portrays her devoted partner, St. Clair Bayfield. The film beautifully balances humor and heart, highlighting Jenkins' determination and the support she receives from those who appreciate her unconventional musical journey. The facilitator for the evening is Kathleen Wilson who earned a doctorate in voice pedagogy from Columbia University and is a member of the Santa Fe Opera Guild Board. Kathleen is the ideal facilitator for what will certainly be a lively discussion.

The event is free, but you must register to attend. Registrants will receive a Zoom link on the morning of October 2 via email.  If you have questions, please email vivacebookgroup@santafeoperaguild.org.

Registration will close at noon on October 2nd.
